WATER BOARDING – CONFINED SPACE TRAINING

How do you train someone to be winched down into a dark confined space and crawl through a series of tunnels without putting them in danger? A Shipping Container Conversion has provided the answer. CS Shipping Containers delivered a 20ft container converted to replicate the conditions water company employees may find underground to be used as part of a training course. Their customer is running a series of courses in Wandsworth designed to train individuals to deal with the conditions that they would experience in say, entering the sewage system or large water pipes in cases of emergency or maintenance.

The container has a trap door in the roof through which the trainee is lowered via a winch into the tunnel system housed within the container. They then go through the dark multi-levelled crawl throughs using the equipment that they would have in the the real situation to negotiate the ladders etc they find. As they progress, breathing apparatus etc can also be introduced to the training.

Shipping Containers with their strong corten steel construction lend themselves to many different – and often bespoke – conversions. Contained, or as they are sometimes known, Confined Space Containerss have multiple applications and are often utilised by the fire brigade, oil companies, submariners and even bomb disposal teams as part of their training regime. The system of tunnels within the container can replicate or be designed individually for the customer’s needs.

Shipping Containers in Liverpool, European Capital of Culture Firework Display

The spectacular firework display to mark the end of Liverpool as the European Capital of Culture 2008 was launched from 20ft collapsible flat racks supplied by CS Shipping Containers.

Held on the 10th January 2009 and watched by over 35,000 people the specialist shipping containers were used as platforms onto which the fireworks were mounted before being lifted onto boats anchored on the River Mersey.

Walk the Plank, the company the produced the display, commissioned CS Shipping Containers to source and deliver the containers to them at Liverpool’s docks. All arrangements had to be made under tight security and delivery requirements.

Flat racks are generally used as specialist shipping containers to transport wide items that would not fit into a traditional shipping container. Typical examples would be heavy machinery, boats etc. The collapsible variety have ends the fold into the middle of the container when not in use and enable several to be transported on one lorry at one time.

The pyrotechnic team used the flat racks as platforms to mount the fireworks on. It is amazing what uses shipping containers can be put to!
